Palestine, Partition and Parallels Across the Colonial Terrain

12th November 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

£5 – £15

Gentle/Radical are delighted to host their first ‘people’s symposium’, bringing together archival films, invited speakers and panel discussion around two key footnotes in British colonial history: the Partition of India in 1947, and the Palestinian ‘Nakba’ (‘Catastrophe’) of 1948.

2017 marks the 70th anniversary of Indian Independence, and the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. On the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday, this symposium invites you to remember less visible tragedies in our colonial history, as they relate to South Asia and the Middle East.

1947 in India, and 1948 in Palestine, were both marked by violent displacement, dispossession from land, and colossal trauma afflicting regions and their inhabitants. We will explore the parallels across these two events, and the dynamics of violence, loss and imperialism in Palestine, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

This is a COMMUNITY-WIDE EVENT, to include screenings of breath-taking film footage; contributions from invited speakers MIKO PELED, SAMAYYA AFZAL, FATIMA RAJINA and others; panel discussion; Q & A; and an evening meal at 6pm (food included in the ticket price).

WE WARMLY WELCOME EVERYONE – whether knowledgeable about these histories or wanting to find out more – to join us for an exciting and enlightening event.

This event is FREE for asylum seekers!
